Did I ever tell you the story of our house?
It was in one of our MAF newsletters but I love telling it so here it comes:
Last year, December 17th, Mark found out he was going to work from Charles de Gaulle from the end of February. On the same day we found out we were going to have a third child.
We were stunned!
With the knowledge of moving to France came the dreaming about our new house. And our wishes.
I had a talk with my English friend Chig about it. I told her we would so love to have a guestfacility. But we couldn't really pray for it... Could we? She told me: "Annemieke, God is a generous God. You can always ask Him. You will see soon enough if he will give it." And so the praying began... It’s a mondayafternoon in January 2009 when our orientation trip to France begins. It’s quite in the car. The boys are staying with a neighbour friend.
We’re excited.
The next day we have an appointment the get a bank account and to visit a few houses.
There is lots of paperwork involved in it and it will take a long time to finalise everything.
The next morning we arrive in Chantilly. The city is beautiful. With lots of high, old buildings. Including the castle.
We arrive at the estate agent and meet Susan. She has an Irish background and will help us to find the perfect house and arrange the paperwork.
10 Minutes later we’re on our way.
We spend the whole morning looking for the perfect house.
Susan told us already that it will be difficult. Our budget, which we think is gigantic, won’t give us the 5 bedroom house we would like.
And the French are only obligated to provide a sink in the kitchen. That means there lots of houses without a kitchen or appliances.
In England the landlord provided everything. Even the lawnmower was his. We have nothing!
The first house has 4 tiny bedrooms. A bathroom with a bath but no shower. There is a kitchen but no appliances.
It’s a nice house but too small for our family. And we wouldn’t have room for guests.
And that’s something we would really like to have.
The 3rd house is quite unhandy on the inside. Two bedrooms upstairs. Two bedrooms down.
The 4th house is in the middle of nowhere.
After experiencing almost 5 years abroad we know what we want. And the middle of nowhere is not for us.
The 2nd house is far to big for us. It’s still above our budget although the price came down 500 euros per month already. But Susan would like to show it to us anyway.
We drive through a long lane. On the left is a big forest. On the right are big big houses.
We thought we were just driving here.
Greatly to our surprise we stop. A gate opens and we see this drive. At the end of the drive is a lovely white house. We looked at each other. And I fell in love with the house at that moment.
Mark told me I shouldn’t. We would never have the money to rent this.
The garden is huge. It has 11 trees in it. A playhouse and swings for the boys. It would be ideal.
The house is bigger then we could ever dream of. The kitchen is old, but tidy and has all the appliances needed. The house has got 6 bedrooms, a large living room with a fireplace. 2 Bathrooms. A loft over the whole house. And a cellar under the whole house. There is certainly enough place for guests here.
During lunch we talk and pray. The choice is between a (too) small house or a (too) big house. We decide to try the big house.
Susan tells us there is probably no negation possible on the price. They have gone down 500 euros already. If they do go down we would probably have to pay from the first of Feb.
If the price stays the same there could be a chance we could rent from the first of March.
But first we go to the bank. Everything works out and 1,5 hours later we’re outside. Susan is surprised. It’s never gone this quickly.
Outside the bank we phone the estate agent. Susan tells her that we are interested in the big house. The estate agent will call the owners immediately.
5 Minutes later, when we enter the office, she is on the phone with the owners.
She tells them we would like to rent from the first of March and tells them our budget.
5 Minutes later the phone rings again. The owners accepted our offer!
Everybody is stunned. Susan is even more stunned then we are. She has never experienced this. “There most be somebody looking after you up there” she says.
The only thing we can say is: “Yes!”
A few minutes later we’re on our way back to our house! It’s nothing less then a miracle.
Even one year later the gratefulness is still there. I’m still in love with the house. It fits us like a specially made coat.
Over the last months we have had almost 60 guests. Who helped us during the pregnancy, when I was in hospital and stayed over during the summer.
We're so thankful God doesn’t only carry us, but he takes care also.
The road we live on is: Chemin des Aigles. It means: “Path of the Eagles”
We literally let ourselves fall into our French adventure. Like a young eagle does.
It falls from high but knows his father will always pick him up.
Just like us!
This is why our house is called: Maison Miracle!
It’s nothing less then a miracle!
